Paediatric orthotic management

The management of Cerebral Palsy and other like conditions or disabilities with orthoses is a specialty of Geelong Orthotics. In 2002 Ben was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to travel to the USA, London and Germany to investigate the latest advances in the management of Paediatric Cerebral Palsy with orthoses. Technology and new techniques have been implemented since his Fellowship.

 

We work closely with the Paediatric medical team and specialty clinics at Barwon Health, Geelong Hospital, providing bracing for

  • Unstable Hips – DDH – (Developmental Hip Dyplasia)
  • Clubfoot – CTEV - (Congenital Tallipes EquinoVarus)
  • Toe Walkers

 

What to expect when you visit Geelong Orthotics

  • Our reception staff will greet you and collect relevant personal or medical details, referrals or medical documents such as medical reports or X-Rays
  • Our orthotists will assess your condition often along with a referral from your Doctor, Physiotherapist or Surgeon.
  • We will recommend the most appropriate orthosis to assist in the management of your condition
  • Costs will be outlined before proceeding with the fitting
  • Assessment, measuring or casting for the orthosis
  • Fitting may be immediate for pre-fabricated orthoses. Some Custom made orthoses can be made while you wait or may require several days or weeks to be made.
  • A review appointment at a set amount of time after the fitting of your orthosis to ensure it is comfortable while providing optimal support or alignment and achieving the goals we expect.

 

Support Services
It is important to report any concerns or issues you are facing following the fitting of an orthosis. Concerns can include:

  • Issues with the fitting or comfort
  • Rubbing or pain caused by the orthosis
  • Changes in conditions

 

In the event of any concerns we can offer

  • Advice over the phone
  • A review appointment to adjust or alter the orthosis to ensure optimal function and comfort.

 

Definitions:
Orthotist: An Allied Health professional who is trained in assessing, measuring and fitting the appropriate orthosis that best serves the individuals requirements. Education is provided regarding the use and care of the orthosis. Orthotists in Australia are awarded a Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics after studying clinical and technical subjects including biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, social sciences and materials technology.

Orthoses:
Extrinsic appliances (Braces or Splints) designed to support, align, protect or correct deformities or to improve the function of movable parts of the body.
