Can Orthotics Help with Knee, Hip, or Back Pain?

As orthotists, we often see patients who come in with foot pain, but leave surprised to learn that their knee, hip, or back pain may also be linked to how their feet function. The connection lies in something called the kinetic chain.
Understanding the Kinetic Chain
The kinetic chain is the idea that the body’s joints and segments are interconnected. When one part of the chain is misaligned or not functioning properly, like the feet, it can cause compensations and stress further up the body.
Think of it like a row of dominoes: if the first one (your foot) falls out of alignment, the rest (ankle, knee, hip, spine) can follow.
How Foot Alignment Affects Other Joints
When your feet don’t provide stable support due to flat arches, high arches, or poor biomechanics your body adapts. These adaptations can lead to:
• Knee pain: Misaligned feet can cause the knees to rotate inward or outward, increasing stress on the joint and surrounding tissues.
• Hip pain: Compensation from poor foot posture can alter gait mechanics, leading to overuse or strain in the hip muscles and joints.
• Lower back pain: Uneven leg lengths, pelvic tilt, or poor shock absorption from the feet can contribute to spinal misalignment and muscle fatigue.
Where Orthotics Come In
Custom orthotics are designed to correct foot posture, redistribute pressure, and improve alignment throughout the kinetic chain. By supporting the feet properly, orthotics can:
• Reduce abnormal joint loading
• Improve walking and standing posture
• Minimise compensatory movements
• Relieve pain in knees, hips, and lower back
What to Expect at Geelong Orthotics
We take a whole-body approach. Our assessments include:
• Gait analysis
• Biomechanical assessment including joint range of motion and strength testing
• Footwear review
We work closely with local GPs, physios, and podiatrists to ensure your care is coordinated and effective.
