At Geelong Orthotics, we often get asked:
“How long will my orthotics last?”
The answer depends on a few key factors. Especially how they’re used, what they’re made of, and how your body responds over time.
Typical Lifespan of Orthotics
Most custom orthotics last between 12 to 36 months, depending on:
• Material type
• Activity level
• Footwear compatibility
• Changes in your gait or body mechanics
Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Orthotics
Even if your orthotics look fine, they may no longer be doing their job. Watch for these signs:
1. Increased Pain or Discomfort
If you notice a return of foot, knee, hip, or back pain, your orthotics may no longer be supporting your gait properly.
2. Visible Wear and Tear
Cracks, compressed padding, worn edges, or peeling top covers are signs the device is breaking down.
3. Changes in Gait or Posture
If your walking pattern has changed due to injury, surgery, or ageing your orthotics may need to be adjusted or replaced.
4. Footwear Fit Issues
If your orthotics no longer sit properly in your shoes or cause discomfort, they may have warped or lost shape.
Why Regular Reviews Matter
At Geelong Orthotics, we recommend a review every 12 months, even if you’re not experiencing pain.
Your body changes over time, and your orthotics should evolve with it. We assess:
• Gait and posture
• Joint alignment
• Footwear compatibility
• Orthotic integrity
If needed, we can refurbish or redesign your devices to match your current needs.
Footwear Matters Too
As a subsidiary of Geelong Orthotics, Geelong Footwear ensures your shoes support your orthotics not work against them. Worn-out shoes can reduce the effectiveness of even the best orthotic devices.
